Cheyney (8-10:6-8) got out rebounded and shot poorly from the foul line to fall 79-71 to cross town rival West Chester (13-5:11-3). Despite four players in double figures the Wolves, were out-rebounded 52-33. Cheyney shot only 13-23 from the charity stripe compared to 30-44 from the Golden Rams.
“When you give up so many offensive rebounds it’s tough to overcome,” commented Coach Stephens. “We haven’t had the same starting five most of the season. From a consistency basis it’s difficult without the same guys on the floor.”
The Wolves were led by Rashaad Slappy and Jason Sabb. Slappy netted 19 points while Sabb tallied 17 points all in the second half. It was the fifth consecutive game that Slappy recorded double figures. The Wolves also recorded a season high 10 blocked shots.
The first half was a see-saw battle that featured 14 lead changes with neither team owning more than a three point advantage. The teams went into the locker room tied at 34.
West Chester came out of the locker room and scored the first five points and built up a ten point lead (48-38) six minutes into the half. The Rams were able to extend the lead to 15 before the Wolves cut the lead to five 69-64 with a 13-3 run with 1:58 to play. The Golden Rams converted 8 of 8 free throws in the final two minutes to secure the win.
Cheyney returns home on Saturday to face Shippensburg at 3:00 pm.
