Despite a double double from Deshawn Curtis, 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Calvin Brown, 10 points and 10 rebounds, Cheyney (0-1) fell 87-73 in the Wolves season opener against Bowie State (1-2). Jerrod Johnson chipped in 19 points while Darius Collins added 11.
Cheyney jumped out to a 15-9 lead. Collins hit three three-pointers to open the scoring and Curtis netted the next six points for the Wolves. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the game at 16. With the score tied at 27, the Bulldogs went on a 14-5 run over the final 4:15 of the first half. Bowie scored the first seven points of the second half and the lead ballooned to as many as 28 before the Wolves were able to regain their composure.
With 11:32 remaining and the Bulldogs nursing a lead, Cheyney went on a 24-7 run to cut the deficit to 11 with just over four minutes to play. However, the Wolves would not get any closer.
The Bulldogs placed five players in double figures but were led by Cameron Knox's 23 points while Ray Gattling recorded 18.
Cheyney will host Virginia State in the night cap on Saturday. Tip-off will follow the women's game at 6:00 pm.
