The Cheyney Wolves dropped their second game of the young season, 71-65 at the hands of Virginia State (2-1).
Jerrod Johnson led the Wolves with 24 points while team mate Deshaen Curtis tallied 14 while grabbing a team high 8 rebounds.
Cheyney jumped out to a 12-4 lead but could not hold on. The Trojans were able to tie the game at 12 at the 13:28 mark of the first half and then proceeded to go on a 15-1 run. The Wolves cut the lead to seven, 34-27 with six and a half minutes to play in the half before the Trojans pushed the lead back to double figures; settling on a 41-31 halftime advantage. Johnson hit a three pointer to open the scoring in the second half but the Trojans would score seven unanswered points to push the lead back up to 14. Another jumper by Johnson cut the lead to eight at the 7:28 mark but once again VSU was able to push the advantage back to 14. Cheyney was able to cut the deficit down to single digits in the game's final minute. Johnson nailed another three pointer with 21 seconds showing on the clock to make it a five point game but the Trojans sealed the game with a free throw in the final seconds.
The Trojans were paced by Lamar Kearse and James Vann. The duo netted 13 points apiece.
Cheyney is back in action on Wednesday night at cross town rival West Chester. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
