Cheyney (0-3:0-1) began the rigors of PSAC play against cross town rival West Chester (3-1:1-0) and came up short 78-61. The Wolves owned a 14-9 lead through the first seven minutes of the contest. However, the Golden Rams went on a 10-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 19-16 lead. Nursing a one point lead, 24-23 with 7:16 remaining, West Chester closed out the half with a 20-8 run.
After West Chester pushed the advantage to 15 points early in the second half, Cheyney went on a 14-2 run to cut the advantage to three, 48-45. With the lead at four, 51-47, the Golden Rams went on an 11-0 run to take control with just over six minutes to play. The Wolves could not get any closer.
Cheyney placed three players in double figures. Jerrod Johnson led the way 16 points while Calvin Brown and Dequan Newton chipped in 14 and 11 respectively.
Troy Hockaday came off the bench to lead West Chester with 24 points.
"If we can't shoot better than this, were aren't going to beat to many people," commented head coach Dom Stephens. The Wolves shot 19-62 (.306). It was the third time in as many games that Cheyney did not shoot well.
The Wolves were playing with a depleted line-up and only dressed nine. It also didn't help that Cheyney was in foul trouble most of the contest. Two players fouled out and two others had four.
Cheyney is back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves will host Shippensburg at 3:00 pm in Cope Hall.
