Cheyney (2-15:2-5) fell to # 6 East Stroudsburg (17-0:7-0) 60-44 despite a career high 20 points from Calvin Brown. Brown also grabbed 10 rebounds to register his third double double of the season. Dequan Newton tied his season high with 11 points while getting his sixth start of the year.
The Wolves led briefly 2-0 and then again at 15-14 both thanks to Brown. Brown scored the Wolves first eight points of the night. The Warriors outscored the Wolves 9-2 the final 4:17 of the first half to turn a one point lead into a 28-20 lead as the teams headed into the locker room.
However, the Wolves battled back to tie the game at 31 after Brown made a pair of free throws at the 11:54 mark. On the Wolves next possession it was Brown again who delivered with a basket and foul shot for a traditional three-point-play to put the Wolves up one. Cheyney extended the lead to two, 35-33 after Newton made one of two from the line with 10:18 showing on the clock. However, over the next 7:20 the Warriors outscored the Wolves 23-2 to take command of the game before going on to win.
ESU coach Jeff Wilson earned his 200
th career victory. Whis Grant paced the Warriors with 14 points.
Cheyney is back in action on Saturday afternoon in Cope Hall. The Wolves will take on the Eagles of Lock Haven at 3:00 pm.
