2nd Half Drought Dooms Wolves at UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Sr. Juwan Mullen scored a career-high 21-points and Cheyney University was tied 64-64 with 9:49 at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) Sunday afternoon, but the wolves were held scoreless over the next six minutes while the Mountain Cats scored 12 points en route to a 90-71 PSAC victory inside the Sports Center.

Mullen connected on 6-of-9 shots from the field including 3-of-3 from three-point range, pulled down six-rebounds and dished out three assists. Rafiq Marshall poured in 16-points and Imir Bailey  had 10 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals for the Wolves (0-3, 0-3 PSAC).

A.J. Leahy led the Mountain Cats (3-2, 2-1 PSAC) with 28 points and 13 rebounds, making 6-of-8 from beyond the arc in going 10-of-13 from the field.
After falling behind 5-2 to start the game, Marshall tied the game with a three- pointer, a Lakeem Duncan layup gave the

Wolves the lead, Bailey's layup and two free-throws from Duncan gave the Wolves an 11-5 edge.

Leahy scored to stop the run, but Duncan hit a three and the Wolves led by seven 14-7.

When Michael Oyefusi hit a three-point shot with 10:50 left in the first half, Cheyney led 23-16, matching its largest advantage of the game.

UPJ went on a 17-0 run over the next six minutes to turn the game around and hold a 33-23 edge with 4:01 left in the half. The Mountain Cats led 44-34 at the break.

Bailey and Mullen scored eight points each to lead the Wolves, Duncan had all seven of his points and Marshall added six.

UPJ had an 11-point lead 57-46, with 15:23 left in the second half when the Wolves started their comeback with a three by Mullen to ignite and 18-7 run as the Wolves tied the game at 64-64.

Marshall hit a layup and made a free-throw, then fed Craig McGlond for a hoop, Mullen converted a steal into a layup to cut the lead to four, 61-57 forcing the Mountain Cats to call a timeout.

Leahy answered with a three to push the lead back to seven, then Oyefusi, who finished with 8 points, scored on an offensive rebound, assisted on a Marshall jumper and hit from beyond the arc to tie the game 64-64 at the 9:49 mark.

Neither team scored until the Mountain Cats ended the drought with a free-throw with 7:07 remaining to ignite the decisive run to pull away for the victory.

Cheyney is off until Monday Nov. 30 when it hosts Bowie State at Alfred Cope Hall at 7:30 p.m. in its first home game of the year.
