Panthers top Wolves With Second-Half Run

CHEYNEY, Pa - A 14-2 run midway through the second-half turned a four-point contest into a 16-point advantage and propelled visiting Virginia Union University to a 74-53 victory over host Cheyney University Saturday afternoon inside Alfred Cop Hall.

Lakeem Duncan scored 15 points for the second consecutive game to lead the Wolves (1-7). Duncan made 4-of-10 from beyond the arc, including a 3-fo-6 performance in the first half, to help Cheyney to a 23-18 lead with 6:55 left in the first-half.

The Panthers (5-4) were led by 28 points from Ray Anderson and 18 from Tavon Mealy.

The first four baskets for the Wolves came from three-point land. Juwan Mullen had the first, Duncan nailed the back-to-back three's and Michael Oyefusi connected to give the Wolves a 12-9 lead at the 16:03 mark.

Khaalis Carter made the fifth Cheyney three with 10:32 left in the half giving the Wolves a 17-13 edge.

The Panthers responded with a five-point run to take an 18-17 lead, but a jumper from Carter put the Wolves up by one, Dikemba Amugo's dunk and a layup by Imir Bailey had Cheyney leading 23-18.

Anderson went on a personal seven-point run as Virginia Union scored 10-straight to build a 28-23 edge, Duncan connected from downtown to stop the run.

Anderson scored again, then Mullen scored three in-a-row to make it a 30-29 game with 1:25 to play in the first-half.

The Panthers closed out the half with a five-point run to take a 35-29 lead into the break.

Virginia Union built the lead to seven at 41-34, when Duncan hit his career-best fourth three pointer to cut the deficit to four at 41-37.

Anderson scored again, but Amugo once again slammed home a pass from Basir Fulmore, to make it a four-point contest 43-39 with 16:31 to play.

Mealy and Anderson scored back-to-back three-point plays to start the decisive run.

Craig McGlond pulled down a team-high five rebounds and added six points off the bench for the Wolves. Oyefusi scored eight points,

Mullen had six-points with three assists, Carter and Amugo both finished with six points and Fulmore and Eugene Lett added three assists apiece.

Cheyney is back in action when it hosts Millersville in a PSAC East game on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 8:00 p.m.
