CHEYNEY, Pa. -
Juwan Mullen scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half, but Cheyney University could not overcome the hot shooting of Bloomsburg University and fell 74-61 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division men's basketball action on Wednesday night inside Alfred Cope Hall.
The Wolves (2-14, 1-12 PSAC E) fell behind the Huskies (10-7, 8-5 PSAC E) 11-1 early on, but thanks to the hot shooting of
Rafiq Marshall and
Lakeem Duncan, trailed by only four at 31-27 at the half.
Marshall started the comeback with a jumper, Mullen trimmed the deficit to six with a layup, Wes Lyons would counter with a layup for Bloomsburg, but the Wolves would score eight straight to tie the game at 13-13.
Marshall hit another wing jump shot and Duncan hit back-to-back three-point shots to even the contest at 13-13 with 11:25 to play in the first half.
The Huskies pushed the lead back to six, but a three-pointer and another jumper from Marshall cut the lead to one and
Dikemba Amugo converted a pass from
Khaalis Carter to give Cheyney its first lead of the game 22-21 at the 6:00 minute mark.
Christian Mortellite, who led all-scorers with 28 points, put the Huskies back on top with a three-point play, Marshall's three gave the Wolves a one-point advantage again, but Mortellite countered with a three of his own to lead the Huskies on a 7-2 run to close the half with a 31-27 edge.
Marshall scored all 12 of his points in the first half on 5-of-8 shooting from the field including making both of his three-point attempts. Duncan hit two from beyond the arc and tallied eight points in the first 20 minutes.
Mortellite led the Huskies with 11 and Lyons added 10, they combined to make 9-of-13 shots in the first half.
Mullen opened the second half with a layup, and following a basket by Bloomsburg, Duncan made a three to cut the deficit to one at 33-32.
Mortellite then hit back-to-back three pointers, Mullen drove to the basket and scored again, but Donell Digs made a three point play and Mortellite connected from downtown to push the Huskies lead up to 11 at 45-34 with 15:52 to play in the second half.
Cheyney made it a three-point game following back-to-back three's from Duncan and
Eugene Lett at the 11:11 mark.
With the lead at seven, Carter connected from beyond the arc to bring the crowd to its feet with 5:16 left to play, but the Huskies would score six straight to push the lead back up to 10 and come away with the 74-61 victory.
Mullen went 6-of-12 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free-throw line in the second half to lead the Wolves.
Cheyney made 9-of-10 free-throws in the game and So.
Craig McGlond finished with a career-high 10 rebounds for the Wolves.
Mortellite shot 10-of-16 from the field including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, made all three of his free-throws, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists, while Diggs added 11 points and a game-high eight assists.
The Wolves are scheduled to host Kutztown University on Saturday Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. inside Cope Hall.
