MANSFIELD, Pa.-
Kyra Hines-Allen scored 17 points, but the Cheyney University women's basketball team dropped a 69-55 decision at Mansfield University in PSAC Eastern Division action Wednesday night inside Decker Gymnasium.
The Wolves (2-16, 0-14 PSAC E) held a pair of two point leads in the first quarter, but the Mountaineers (4-13, 2-12 PSAC E) closed the first quarter on a 6-to-0 run and led 15-11 after the first 10 minutes.
Mansfield increased the lead up to nine at 28-19 with 2:47 left in the second period, when Cheyney went on a 6-to-1 run to cut the deficit down to four at 29-25 with 1:38 remaining.
Once again the Mountaineers finished a period strongly this time with an 8-to-0 run to take its biggest lead of the night 37-25 at the break.
Hines-Allen led Cheyney with 11 first half-points while Katie Fitzpatrick led Mansfield with 14 points and Brielle Kelly added 13 points and eight rebounds.
After the Mounties moved out to a 18-point advantage, the Wolves responded with a seven point run to cut the lead to 11 at 47-36 with 3:35 left in the third period.
Unfortunately the trend continued as the Mountaineers scored the final six points to increase the lead to 17 at 53-36 heading to the fourth period.
Marlon Herring led the Wolves with eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks, to go with six points and two assists.
Shania Stamper, who dished out a team-high four assists, scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals.
Fitzpatrick led all scorers with 18 points and Kelly secured a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wolves are off for a week and return to action on Wednesday Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. on the road at Millersville to open the second half of the conference season.
