CHEYNEY, Pa. - Freshman
Khaalis Carter came off the bench to lead Cheyney University with 15 points, but visiting Indiana University of Pennsylvania used a 22-6 run early in the second half to pull away for a 91-64 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
Carter led four Wolves (2-9, 1-7 PSAC East) who finished with double-figures in scoring.
Lakeem Duncan grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go with 13 points, while
Juwan Mullen also scored 13 and
Eugene Lett dished out a team-best three assists to go with 10 points.
IUP (9-5, 6-3 PSAC West) held a 31-20 advantage with 5:08 to play in the first half, when Cheyney responded with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to two at 31-29 with 1:38 to play.
Duncan and Mullen converted back-to-back layups, then
Craig McGlond made a jumper in the lane and Mullen scored and was fouled. His free-throw brought the Wolves to within a basket at 31-29.
After two free-throws by IUP's Brandon Norfleet, Mullen scored again with 13 seconds left, but Norfleet found Anthony Glover in the corner and his three-pointer at the buzzer pushed the lead to five at 36-31 after the first 20 minutes.
Mullen paced Cheyney with a game-best 12 points, while Norfleet and Glover each scored 10 points to lead the Crimson Hawks.
Duncan opened the second half with a free-throw, but Norfleet hit a triple to ignite a seven-point run for IUP to break the game open as the Crimson Hawks held a 43-32 advantage with 17:23 to play.
Carter's layup cut the lead to nine, but the Wolves could get no closer.
Freshman Jacobo Diaz scored 16 points in the second half for the Crimson Hawks and finished with 20 points to tie Glover for game-high honors.
Cheyney returns to action on Wednesday Jan. 6 when it travels to Greensburg, Pa. to take on PSAC West rival Seton Hill at 7:30 p.m.
