Griffins top Lady Wolves: Hines-Allen scores 20

GREENSBURG, PA.- Senior Kyra Hines-Allen scored 20 points and sophomore TaKayla Ellis added 16, but the Cheyney University women's basketball team could not hang on to a slim 27-26 lead at the half and dropped a 64-47 decision at Seton Hill University Wednesday night in PSAC crossover action inside the McKenna Center.

The Wolves (2-11, 0-9 PSAC E) led by five 22-17 on a layup by Hines-Allen with 5:27 left in the second period, but the Griffins (8-7, 4-5 PSAC W) would respond with an 8-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with 1:35 to play.

Ellis knotted the game with her third three pointer of the half, then connected on a driving layup to put CU in front by two at 27-25 with 32 seconds left in the second period. A Seton Hill free-throw cut the lead to one as the teams headed for the break.

Ellis led the way with 13 points, Hines-Allen scored 10 while Marlon Herring had four rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Wolves.

The tight first half saw five lead changes and the score was tied four times.

The Griffins went ahead with back-to-back baskets to start the second-half to regain the lead for good.

Hines-Allen converted a pass from Shania Stamper to cut the lead to one at 30-29 with 6:31 left in the third period, but Seton Hill scored the next six points to take a 36-29 advantage with 3:16 showing on the clock.

Hines-Allen again cut the deficit with a layup, and her two free-throws made it a five-point game, 38-33 at the 1:40 mark.

The Griffins scored the final four points of the period to make it a 42-33 contest heading to the fourth.

Stamper scored four points to start the final period, but the Wolves could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Stamper finished with a team-high four assists to go with four points, while Herring registered career-bests with 10 rebounds and two blocks and also had a game-high five steals.

Cheyney returns home to host Lock Haven in a PSAC East battle on Saturday Jan. 9 at 1 p.m. inside Alfred Cope Hall.
