CHEYNEY, Pa. - Fresh off a doubleheader sweep against Seton Hill on Wednesday night inside Cope Hall, the Cheyney University basketball squads are back in action as the Wolves host Shippensburg, on Saturday afternoon,with the men's game tipping off at 1:00 PM and the women scheduled to start at 3:00.
The men, who are coming off its first victory at home this season, 63-59 over Seton Hill on Wednesday, will take on the No.8 and undefeated Raiders (16-0, 12-0 PSAC E)who are coming off an overtime win at home over East Stroudsburg.
The Wolves (2-14, 2-10 PSAC E) used a balanced attack, and Fr. Zahir Stewart broke a 59-59 tie with a twisting layup with 1:18 remaining as Cheyney closed the game with the final four points, to overcome the Griffins on Wednesday, to secure its first home win of the season..
Cheyney will need to keep its composure against the high-flying Raiders, who are led by Jr. Dustin Sleva,who averages over 20 points and 11 rebounds per game.
The Raiders have won the last four contests between the schools.
The Lady Wolves (3-9, 3-9 PSAC E), who have won two consecutive games at home after holding off Seton Hill on Wednesday, are 3-3 in 2017 and have no easy task with the Raiders (13-5, 8-4 PSAC E) who sit at the top of the table in the east having won all seven contests vs. eastern division opponents.
Cheyney jumped out to its largest lead of the season on Wednesday 44-20 midway through the second quarter vs Seton Hill on Wednesday and withstood a furious comeback by making 5-of-6 free-throws in the final 42 seconds to pull away for the 71-64 triumph.
The Lady Wolves snapped a 12-game losing streak vs the Raiders with a 64-62 victory inside Cope Hall last year, by building an 18-point first half lead and hanging on for the win.
