MILLERSVILLE, Pa- Cheyney University So. Marlon Herring scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Jr. TaKayla Ellis sent the game into overtime with a 15 footer with .3 left in the fourth, but Millersville outscored the Lady Wolves 12-3 in the extra session to come away with a 80-71 victory Wednesday night in PSAC East action inside Pucillo Gymnasium.
So. Briana Hedgepeth scored 14 of her 16-points in the second half as the Wolves (3-11, 3-11 PSAC E) compete in their first overtime game of the season. Alayah Hall led all scorer with 29 points to pace the Marauders (8-11, 6-8 PSAC E) and Celeste Robinson added 21 for the victors.
The game got off to slow start and was tied 10-10 after the first period. The scoring heated up in the second and Millersville carried a 28-26 edge at the half.
Taschell Phillips led Cheyney with 10 points at half connecting on 3-of-4 from the field, So. Quinniea Gross added six also going 3-of-4, while So. Marlon Herring scored six points by going 4-for-4 from the line. Hall registered 11 first half points for Millersville.
The Marauders held a 22-12 advantage off the boards in the first 20 minutes, and held the Lady Wolves to only one offensive rebound in the first half.
After Celeste Robinson opened the third quarter with a three for Millersville, the Lady Wolves responded with a five-point run keyed by Hedgepeth with back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 31-31.
The Marauders built an eight point lead 53-45, but a person six point run by Herring and a three-point shot from Sr. Adriene Small made it a 47-44.
Millersville went to the fourth with a 52-48 advantage.
Cheyney trailed 58-55 with 5:16 to play when they went on an eight-point run to take its largest lead of the game at 63-58 with 3:15 to play.
Jr. Shania Stamper's layup started the run and first three-point make of Herring's career put the Lady Wolves ahead 60-58, a free-throw from Herring and a driving layup from Hedgepeth made it 63-58.
The Marauders tied the game at 63-63 on a basket from Hall and a three-pointer from Aunjel Van Brakle, Herring responded with an offensive rebound and a basket to put Cheyney back up by two 65-63. Gross pushed the lead to three at 66-63 on free-throw with 1:29 to play.
Hall tied the game again with an old-fashioned three point play and then a Kendra Bamberger layup with under three seconds to play gave Millersville the two-point edge.
The Wolves called a time-out to move the ball over half-court and Ellis sent the game to overtime with her first made shot of the contest.
The Marauders scored the first four points of the overtime, Ellis hit a three-pointer, to cut the lead to one, but a three-pointer by Van Brakle pushed the advantage to six with 54 seconds remaining and put the game away.
Phillips ended the game with 12 points, Gross added nine points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
The Marauders held a 43-35 edge off the glass and connected on 8-18 from beyond the arc (44.4%) while the Lady Wolves were 6-19 (31.6%)
Cheyney returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Bloomsburg to start the second half of the PSAC East schedule, with the tipoff scheduled for 1 p.m. inside Cope Hall.
