TaKayla Ellis scored a season-high 19 points to lead the Cheyney University Women's basketball team to its first victory of the season 59-48 in PSAC East action at Bloomsburg University Tuesday evening inside Nelson Field House.
The Lady Wolves (1-6, 1-6 PSAC E) only trailed once in the game and led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter and held off a comeback attempt from the Huskies (1-10, 0-7) to give Head Coach Tammy A. Bagby her first career victory.
The Lady Wolves jumped out to an 8-0 lead only to see the Huskies respond with a nine point blitz and take a 9-8 advantage with 2:51 to play in the first. Ellis gave Cheyney the lead for good with a layup at the 2:35 mark and a basket from Sr.
Taschell Phillips made it a 12-9 edge for Cheyney after the first period.
An 8-3 start to the second saw Cheyney take a 20-12 lead with 1:53 to play and eventually take a 23-15 advantage at the half-time break.

Quinniea Gross pulled down seven rebounds, with three steals and three blocks in the first 20 minutes.
The Huskies crawled to within 27-20 with 6:29 left in the third, when the Lady Wolves went on a 9-0 lead to take a 36-20 lead, marking the largest of the season for Cheyney.
Gross started the run with a free-throw, Sr.
Adriene Small then connected on three-pointer, from Phillips, then Small found Phillips for a jumper and Sr.
Amber Genwright capped the run with a steal and layup.
Bloomsburg closed the quarter on a 7-3 run to make it a 39-27 game heading to the fourth.
Cheyney built the lead quickly to 16 on back-to-back baskets from Marlon Herring to open the quarter, but the Huskies fought back with a 6-point blitz to cut the lead the 43-33 at the 6:02 mark.

Shania Stamper and Genwright pushed the lead to 47-33, but a 10-0 run by the Huskies made it a 47-43 game with 2:29 to play. Genwright set up So.
Marlon Herring for a layup to ignite a 6-point run by the Wolves, Ellis found Gross and Stamper made two free-throws to put the game away at 53-43 with 38 seconds left. Ellis scored the final six points of the game for Cheyney.
Cheyney has won back-to-back games inside Nelson Field House after a 55-53 triumph last season.
Gross scored five points and set career-highs with nine rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Small made both of her three-point shots and Herring finished with seven points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Ellis was 6-of-11 from the field and made all six free-throw attempts for a game-high 19, with three rebounds three assists and a block.
Cheyney held a 30-12 edge on points in the paint and outscored Bloomsburg 16-9 off the bench.
Cheyney returns to action on Friday night when it hosts Mansfield University at 5:30 PM inside Alfred Cope Hall.
