Quick Start Not Enough as Women's Basketball Drops 79-70 Contest at Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – TaKayla Ellis scored a season-high 25-points and the Cheyney University women's basketball team scored a season-high 70 points, but it was not enough as host Gannon University used a 15-point first quarter run to take the lead en route to a 79-70 victory Sunday afternoon in PSAC crossover action inside the Hammermill Center.

Eliis, who set the all-time Cheyney (0-4, 0-2 PSAC East) 3-point record as a junior, matched her career-best with five triples and finished two-points shy of her career-best 27 set a season ago at West Chester.

The Golden Knights (3-2, 2-0 PSAC West) had four players reach double figures led by Chelsea Rourke with 15 points, on five- 3-point shots, and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Wolves jumped out to a 12-2 lead to start the game. Ellis opened with a three-pointer, Yasmine Dorrielan scored from Marlon Herring, who  recorded a career-high six assists, a steal by Gianni Hill led to a layup, which was followed by a Jamyra Maye steal and basket, a free-throw from Dorrielan who then found Ellis for a jumper with 4:44 to play in the first quarter.

The Golden Knights responded with a 15-0 run to close out the first with a 17-12 lead.

Khadijah Pearson opened the second period with a three- point shot to make it a 17-15 contest, but the Golden Knights would score the next seven points to push the lead to 23-15.

Sr. Ceani Beaden started the Wolves comeback with an offensive rebound and a layup, after an exchange of three-pointers, Beaden blocked a shot grabbed the rebound and scored on a layup, then grabbed the defensive board again leading to Drazana Vulic basket to cut the lead to four at 28-24.

Gannon carried a 31-27 advantage into the third quarter.

The Wolves cut the lead to one- three times to start the third, Hill made a three-pointer to start the quarter, then made another  from beyond the arc, following a Gannon three and then Ellis scored to cut the lead to 36-35.

A 13-to-5 run pushed the lead to nine at 49-40 with 1:25 left in the third quarter. A 6-point run from the Wolves made it a three-point game, but a three-point shot at the buzzer gave Gannon a 52-46 lead heading to the fourth.

The Golden Knights opened the quarter with the first eight points to push the lead to 14 and Cheyney was not able to get closer than nine the rest of the way.

Hill finished with 12-points including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc with four steals, three rebounds and three assists, Maye reached double-figures with 10 points and added four assists, Dorrielan scored seven points, grabbed four boards with two blocks.

Beaden was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field for a career-best six points and Herring, who matched Beaden and Ellis with five rebounds, added five points and a career-high six  assists.

The Wolves, who registered a season high in points with 70, assists with 20, were outscored 22-to-7 from the free-throw line.

Cheyney will have three non-conference games before its home opener, VS Pitt. Johnstown, in PSAC crossover action, on Saturday, Dec.2 inside Cope Hall.

The Wolves head to Ettrick, Va. for a battle with Shaw University at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24, then take on host Virginia State University on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., before traveling to Lincoln for the Battle of the First on Thursday Nov. 30 with the tip-off scheduled for 5:30 inside Manuelo Rivera Gymnasium.
