ETTRICK, VA. – Freshman
Jamyra Maye (Edison, N.J. / J.P. Stevens) connected on her first career-three-point attempt with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter, to break a 66-66 tie and put the Cheyney women's basketball team ahead to stay in a 71-68 victory over Shaw University Friday evening inside the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Maye and Sophomore
Gianni Hill (Dorchester, Mass. / Pope John XXIII) led the Lady Wolves (1-4) with a season-high 16 points each, senior
TaKayla Ellis (Accokeek, Md. / Gwynn Park) added 14 points and Junior
Marlon Herring (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Penn Hills) added 11 points and 11-rebounds to secure her first double-double of the season.
Klintisha Martin led all players with 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Bears (1-3) who erased a 9-point fourth quarter deficit to tie the game 64-64 with 3:31 to play.
Maye was fouled and made two free-throws at the 3:12 mark, a Keyonte Cherry layup tied the game at 66-66 with 2:51 to play, setting the stage for Maye who took a pass from Herring and connected from beyond the arc to put Cheyney ahead to stay.
The Bears cut the deficit to one, but Senior
Yasmine Dorrielan (Irvington, N.J. / Bloomfield Tech) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it a three-point game with 18 seconds left to make it a 71-68 final as Maye secured the rebound to end the game.
The victory marks the first win of the season and the initial non-PSAC victory in the career of Tammy A. Bagby in her second-season as Head Coach at Cheyney University.
Maye set first year season-high marks of 16-points, eight rebounds, seven assists and added three steals Hill made a season-high four three-point shots, and pulled down a season-high four rebounds.
Dorrielan collected 13-rebounds, with four blocks and six points, Ellis added three rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Herring equaled the game-high with three steals with three assists.
Cheyney is back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off scheduled VS host Virginia State University.
