MANSFIELD, Pa. – Host Mansfield University used a 20-5 run in the second half to turn a six point lead into a 21-point advantage leading to a 72-45 victory over Cheyney University in PSAC East men's basketball Wednesday night inside Decker Gymnasium.
Amir Boney led the Wolves (2-15, 2-11 PSAC E) with 10 points and eight rebounds while Jeff Lewis added seven points all coming in the first half and six rebounds.
Tyler Moffe who led all players with 21 points to pace the Mountaineers (6-11, 5-9 PSAC E), connecting on five three-pointers which included a four point play that turned the game around in the first half.
Mansfield jumped out to an 8-0 lead to open the game, but Cheyney, which did not score until a Kyle Parker layup at the 15:32 mark reeled off the next eight points to even the game at 8-8 on a layup from Boney.
Mansfield led 14-10, but Cheyney responded with an 11-0 run to take a 21-14 lead at the 5:50 mark.
Boney scored from Parker, followed by two free-throws from Brewster Ward III, Lewis connected from downtown and flew in for a fast break layup and Ward III capped the run with a jumper.
Moffe would ignite an eight-point run with a four-point play and six straight points as Mansfield regained the lead, the Wolves would tie the game on a Parker free-throw 22-22 with 3:42 to play in the half.
Another seven-point run built the lead up 29-22 and Boney would close the scoring in the first with a basket to make it 31-26 after 20 minutes.
After a quick five-points from Mansfield to start the half built the lead to 10 36-26, the Wolves held the Mountaineers off the scoreboard for five minutes, but could only manage four points themselves on layups from Cliff St. Juste and Boney to make it a 36-30 contest with 13:21 to play.
Mansfield would finally end the drought with a three-point shot to ignite an 11-2 run in just over two minutes to take control of the game.
The Wolves return to action on Saturday afternoon at East Stroudsburg with the tipoff inside Koehler Fieldhouse scheduled for 3:00 PM.
