Women's Basketball Closes With 8-0 Run in 69-63 Win at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Marlon Herring tied the game with two free-throws with 1:43 to play and her layup at the 1:05 mark put the Wolves  ahead to stay as the Cheyney University women's basketball team scored the final eight points of the games to secure its second straight victory 69-63 at Mansfield in PSAC East action Wednesday night inside Decker Gymnasium.

TaKayla Ellis led Cheyney (5-14, 3-10 PSAC E) with 21 points connecting on 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and collected a game-high four steals, Yasmine Dorrielan scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, while Herring added 14 points and eight boards.

Brielle Kelly led all players with 26 points and paced the Mountaineers (7-13, 5-9 PSAC E) with 10 rebounds.

The Wolves trailed by as by 11 points at the half as Ellis was held to just three points, but the senior exploded for 13 third quarter points including the Wolves final eight, to bring Cheyney within one at 48-47 after 30 minutes

Mansfiled had held the lead in the game until Dorrielan gave Cheyney its first lead of the game at 49-48 with a layup at the 8:25 mark of the fourth.

The Mounties regained the lead with a three-point shot, but Ellis tied the game with two free-throws to spark a 12-4 run that saw Cheyney build a six-point advantage of 61-55 at the 4:37 mark.

Mansfiled responded with and 8-0 run to take a two-point lead 63-61 with 2:18 to play, then Herring drained two from the charity stripe and an Ellis steal turned into a layup for Herring at the 1:05 mark. Dorrielan then grabbed a defensive rebound, went to line and calmly sank two free-throws to give the Wolves a 67-63 edge with 23 seconds to play.

Gianni Hill then pulled in a rebound and made two more from the line for the final points of the game and a 69-63 Wolves victory.

With the victory Cheyney moves into 7th position in the PSAC East, even with 6th place Shippensburg, with three victories each, but the Raiders (3-9) have one loss less than the 3-10 Wolves.

Cheyney is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they head to East Stroudsburg to close out the month of January, with the tipoff from Koehler Fieldhouse scheduled for 1:00 PM.
