CLARION, Pa. - Jeff Lewis scored 15 points including four second half dunks to lead Cheyney to a 71-65 at Clarion University in PSAC crossover action Wednesday night inside Tippin Gymnasium.
Lewis put Cheyney (2-9, 2-5 PSAC E) up 54-48 with back to back dunks and secured the victory with a steal and slam with 20 seconds remaining. Olin Ugo and Cliff St. Juste added 12 points each and Kyle Parker chipped in with 11 points.
Brandon Williams led all scorers with 25 points to pace the Golden Eagles (3-10, 0-7 PSAC W).
Cheyney jumped out to a 6-0 lead and led 20-12, but Clarion used a 12-point run to take a 25-20 lead and built it up to 34-25 with 1:18 remaining.
The Wolves closed the half with a 9-2 run with three consecutive three-point shots. Zahir Stewart started the run, St. Juste then connected from downtown and Lewis closed the half with a triple to make it a 36-34 game at the break.
The lead see-sawed back and forth until Johnathan Howard put Cheyney ahead (48-47) to stay with a layup with 10:47 to play.
Lewis then took over with a steal and dunk, then a fast break slam and another steal and breakaway to put Cheyney up 54-48 with 7:46 remaining.
Clarion cut the lead to one, when Stewart made a three-pointer to spark an 8-to-1 run to to push the lead to eight at 63-55 with 4:35 to play.
Once again Clarion trimmed the lead down to one 65-64 at the 2:13 mark, Lewis then found Ugo for a layup and Parker made two free-throws to put the Wolves ahead by five 69-64, then Lewis sealed the victory with another theft and dunk to make it a 61-55 final.
Ugo led Cheyney with eight rebounds, St. Juste had four assists and Lewis finished with four steals.
The Wolves are back in PSAC East action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Bloomsburg for a 3:00 PM tipoff with the Huskies.
