TaKayla Ellis 1,000 Points: Lady Wolves fall 60-55 to Kutztown

CHEYNEY, Pa. – TaKayla Ellis led Cheyney University with 20 points scored and crossed the 1,000-point plateau, but visiting Kutztown University broke a 62-62 tie with an 8-to-1 run en route to a 70-65 victory in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon inside Cope Hall.
Ellis connected on a free-throw at the 3:03 mark of the fourth period to score her 1,000 career point in the 97th game played in a Cheyney (5-21, 3-17 PSAC E) uniform. Ja'la Walker recorded her second career double-double with a career high 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Riley Derr led four Golden Bears (15-11, 10-10 PSAC E) who reached double figures in scoring, with 20 including six three-pointers, while Keifonna Ferguson added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Ellis closed the first with a basket to give Cheyney a 22-21 lead after 10 minutes.

Derr sparked a 14-5 run with a three-pointer to open the second quarter and the Golden Bears held a 42-32 late in the half.

Ellis connected from downtown to make it a 42-35 contest at the break as she led all scorers with 12 points, just six points from the 1,000- point milestone.

The Wolves trailed 54-45, with :37 left in the third, when Ellis made two free-throws for career-point 999 and Gianni Hill then connected from downtown at the buzzer to pull Cheyney within four 54-50 heading to the fourth.

The Lady Wolves regained the lead on a jumper from Octavia Hawkins a steal by Hill and a layup from Hawkins and another three-pointer from Hill and Cheyney led 58-57 at the 8:00 mark.

The lead see-sawed back and forth and Hawkins made a three-point shot to tie things up at 62-62 with 4:03 to play.

Zoe Zerman put Kutztown ahead to stay with a triple to make it 65-62 with 3:45 remaining.

Ellis would step to the line and make the first free-throw for career-point 1,000 with 3:03 to play to make it 65-63.

Back-to-back baskets from Kutztown made it a 69-63 game, a layup from Ellis and a free-throw from the Golden Bears closed out the scoring.

Hawkins finished with eight points, Khadijah Pearson scored seven, while Hill added six points and Briana Hedgepeth collected seven rebounds with six points.

Cheyney continues its home-stand on Wednesday when Lock Haven visits Cope Hall, with the tipoff scheduled for 5:30.
