Gators Top Wolves Volleybal in Season Finale

BALTIMORE, MD – Cheyney University volleyball took one final road trip to Baltimore, MD, to end its season on Thursday night and fought valiantly, before falling to Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMD) inside the Marion Burke Knott (MBK) Athletic Gym.

Senior VVeronica Martin (Philadelphia, PA, Parkway West HS) registered a career-best 11 digs for The Wolves (3-12) and fellow senior Hassana Coleman (Philadelphia,PA, Freire Charter HS) recorded two kills and a block assist in their final match at Cheyney.

It was senior night for the Gators (15-7), who rebounded after having its 12-match winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, capturing the match (25-14, 25-9, 25-20).

The opening set was close early and a kill from sophomore Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside, HS) made it a 5-4 contest, but NDMD reeled off eight of the next nine points to pull away and go on to the victory.

The Wolves jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set with Kelly serving and a kill by Coleman, then led 6-4 following a kill from Kelly. The Gators took a 7-6 edge, but the Wolves would forge ahead at 8-7, NDMD took control by scoring the next 15 points to make it a 22-8 set.

The third set started with a 4-0 advantage for the home team, a kill from freshman Tania Hall (Elizabethville, PA, Upper Dauphin) got the Wolves on the board. A block from freshman Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA, Haverford HS ) tied the contest at 6-6 and a block from Hall tied things up at 8-8. Cheyney then took its first lead of the set and pulled ahead 10-8. Cheyney pushed its advantage to 14-9 after two Kelly kills and Kelly and Hall combined for a block. After the Gators pulled within 14-12, a kill by Martin gave the Wolves a 15-12 edge, once again the Gators regained the lead by scoring 11 of the next 12 points to make it 23-16. Cheyney climbed back to 24-20, before the final kill by the Gators.

NDMD ended with 41 kills on 36 assists as it heads into the CSAC championships next week.

Kelly led Cheyney with seven kills, a block assist and added seven digs, Hall recorded two kills, four assists, a solo block, a block assist and six digs, sophomore Vita Fitch (York, PA, William Penn HS) had a team-high five assists with six digs, while Jones tied for team-best with 11 digs and registered a solo block and block assist.
