CHEYNEY, PA. – Sophomore
Vita Fitch (York, PA, William Penn HS) served 15 consecutive points in the third set, as Cheyney University volleyball overcame a slow start, to complete a three-set sweep of visiting Manor College on Wednesday night inside Cope Hall.
The (3-7) Wolves picked up it first home victory of the season, and second win over the BlueJays, by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-3. Fitch recorded 10 aces, 11 assists and five kills to pace Cheyney.
Cheyney coming off an eight-day break, its longest of the year, only held an 8-7 lead in the first set, but then went on a 10-3 outburst to take control of the set with an 18-11 edge, and closed it out with a kill from Fitch followed by an ace and another service winner.
Fitch then opened the second frame with an ace, sophomore
Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside, HS) registered a kill before serving an ace and sparking the Wolves to a 7-1 start. Junior
Julia Kinney-Bell (Hyattsville, MD, Chaminade Julienne Catholic HS) served Cheyney to 12-2 advantage, that included two more of Cheyney's 21 aces recorded during the match.
The final stanza began with a Kinney-Bell kill followed by 16 consecutive serves from Fitch, including four straight aces as the Wolves bolted to a 16-0 lead.
Kelly led a balanced Cheyney attack with six kills, Fitch added five, freshman
Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA, Haverford HS ) had four, Kinney-Bell tallied three, while seniors H
Hassana Coleman (Philadelphia,PA, Freire Charter HS) and
Veronica Martin (Philadelphia, PA, Parkway West HS) recorded one each. The wolves held a 20-3 advantage in kills on the night.
Cheyney is back on the road on October 12, when it takes the short trip to Media, PA,, to visit Penn State Brandywine, with the first serve scheduled for 7 PM.
