Chargers Too Much for Young Wolves MBB falls at Dominican

Orangeburg, NY – Sophomore Kian Nixon (Upper Marlboro, MD, Feather River CC) scored a season-high 19 points, but the Cheyney men's basketball team fell to host Dominican University of New York, 92-65 at on Saturday night the 10th Annual Daniel Sullivan Memorial Tournament.

The Wolves (2-1) kept the contest close and trailed the NCAA Division II Chargers (4-0), 40-31 at the half as Nixon put up 12 points and pulled down five rebounds, and freshman Jalen Boyd-Savage (Pennsauken, NJ, Paul VI HS) added nine of his 18 points in the first half.

Cheyney could not cut into the lead in the second half but was able to stay relatively close and only trailed by 11, 47-36 following a Rynell Bert (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy HS) layup and 56-43 with 13:18 to play, on a layup from sophomore Nathan Pettus (Philadelphia, PA, Hill Freedman World Academy HS), but the size, strength and experience of the Chargers was too much for the young Wolves, as Dominican pulled away for its fourth straight victory to start the season.

Freshman Dut Kuol (Aweil, South Sudan, Olympus Prep HS) led Cheyney with nine rebounds and added eight points, both season-bests for the first year from the South Sudan. Bert finished with eight points and tied for team-best with three assists, with classmate Robert Keys (Philadelphia, PA, Paul Robeson HS).

Cheyney had difficulty with the physicality of the Chargers man-to-man defense, which led to only eight assists for the Wolves and a season low 42.9% from the field. The Wolves did connect on 8-19 (42.1%) on three-point shots with Nixon going 3-5 and Boyd-Savage connecting on 4-10 from downtown.

The Chargers shot 58.1% from the field 10-25 (40%) from three and had 23 assists and a 39-27 advantage off the glass.

On Sunday at 4:30 PM, Cheyney takes to the court vs 1-3 Caldwell University, who picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday 102-76 over Molloy University.
