Slow Start to Second Half Dooms MBB at Goldey-Beacom

Wilmington, DE. – Freshman Jalen Boyd-Savage (Pennsauken, NJ, Paul VI HS, ) led all scorers with 21 points, but a balanced and deep Goldey-Beacom College squad used a 12-2 start of the second half to pull away for an 83-59 victory on Wednesday night inside the Joseph West Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

Cheyney (2-8) took its only lead of the contest on a dunk by freshman Dajer Muldrow (Jersey City, NJ, Trenton Catholic HS, ) to open the scoring. The Lightning (4-8), a Division II team from the CACC, took the lead for good a minute later as part of a nine point outburst, to take a 9-2 advantage.

Cheyney trailed 16-6, when it cut the lead in half with a free-throw from Muldrow and four points from freshman Robert Keys to make the score 16-11 at the 12:26 mark of the first half.

The lead grew as large as 13 and the Wolves were able to keep the game close, pulling to within seven several times in the first 20 minutes, the final time on a pair of free-throws from freshman Rynell Bert (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy HS, )to make it a 37-30 game with :37 left in the first half. A basket from Goldey-Beacom followed and the Lightning took a 39-30 edge at the break.

Keys led all scorers with nine points at the break. Boyd-Savage added seven, while sophomore Kian Nixon (Upper Marlboro, MD, , Feather River CC) chipped in with five. Cheyney held its own on the boards, with the Lightning holding a slim 12-10 edge, but the difference was a 16-2 performance from the Goldey-Beacom reserves.

The teams exchanged baskets to start the second half, but then the Lightning struck for 10 straight points to pull away and the Wolves could get no closer than 16 the rest of the night.

Keys finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and a team-high three steals. Muldrow added 10 points and a team-best six rebounds, while Nixon also reached double-figures in scoring with 10 points and pulled down five boards with a team-best three assists. Cheyney was a season best 90.9% from the charity stripe, connecting on 10-11 on the night.

Five Lightning players reached double digits in points, and they ended with a 36-4 advantage in scoring off the bench.


The Wolves are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM when it hosts the Newport News Apprentice School inside Cope Hall. Cheyney will look to avenge its 65-53 road loss to  the Builders on December 3.
