WBB Falls at Wilmington on Friday Afternoon

Wilmington, DE. – Senior JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD, , Lincoln University) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds but fouled out early in the fourth quarter as Wilmington University (Del.) captured its first victory of the season 62-42 Friday afternoon in women's basket action inside the WU Athletics Complex.

Cheyney (1-5) kept the game close trailing by two points at the end of each of the first three quarters, but the Wildcats (1-10) outscored the Wolves 24-6 in the final stanza.

The Wolves took the early lead on a three-pointer from Lilly and a layup from sophomore Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside HS ) put Cheyney up 5-1. The Wildcats made it 5-4, but another Kelly layup and a three from junior Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ, , Southeastern CC) gave the Wolves its largest lead at 10-4 with 6:05 to play in the first. A Lilly basket put Cheyney up 13-9 with 2: 54 to play in the first, but the Wolves were unable to score again and trailed 15-13 heading to the second quarter.

Once again Cheyney pulled ahead early in the second taking a 20-17 edge after a steal by sophomore Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD, , CCBC Essex) led to a Braxton layup, followed by a Washington three. Baskets by Lilly and Braxton had Cheyney up 24-21, but the Wildcats closed on a 6-1 run to take a 27-25 edge at half.

Kelly, Lilly and Braxton scored seven points each to pace the Wolves in a tight first half, Senior Zinnia Wormack grabbed six rebounds as did Lilly. Kelly had three assists and three rebounds.

The Wildcats looked to putting some distance between the two teams building its largest lead of the game at 32-25 with 6:57 to go in the third. The Wolves did not score until a Braxton free-throw at the 6:12 mark and then made it 32-28 on a putback by Lilly, which sparked an 11-4 run for Cheyney.

Lilly scored nine points during the run and then capped the comeback with a triple to tie the game at 36-36 with :44 ticks left on the clock. Two free-throws from Wilmington saw a familiar story with the Wildcats up by two at the end of a quarter 38-36.

The Wolves were not able to keep it close in the fourth quarter as both Lilly and Wormack fouled out and the Wildcats pulled away for its first win of the season.

Braxton was the only other Cheyney player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points and five rebounds, Washington added eight points and tied Kelly with four steals. Kelly closed with seven points, five boards and three assists, while Wormack tied Lilly for team-high with nine rebounds and matched Kelly with three assists.

The Wolves are back in action tomorrow at home as it welcomes the University of the District of Columbia with the tipoff scheduled for 1:00 PM inside Cope Hall. The men's contest with Newport News Apprentice School will follow at 3:00 PM.

Tickets are $10.00 for the double-header and are available at the door. It's the final home game of 2022 and the final game of 2022 for the women's team. Cheyney will return home on Jan. 4, 2023.
