Cheyney, Pa. – Cheyney University women's basketball had four players reach double figures, but were unable to overcome a powerful Bryant & Stratton College at Buffalo (Buffalo) squad that came away with a 77-50 victory inside Cope Hall on Sunday afternoon.
Senior
JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD / Lincoln University) and sophomore
Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD / CCBC Essex) each scored 14 points to lead the Wolves (1-9), junior
Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ / Southeastern CC) recorded a double double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore
Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD / Parkside HS) also reached double digits with 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The Bobcats (16-3), dominated the backboards with a 69-36 edge off the glass. Charm Stone led the way with 20 caroms and scored 14 points, and Kat Kanhoye also had a double-double with a game-high 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Cheyney was able to keep the game close in the first quarter after falling behind 7-0, Braxton made a three point play and Lilly made two free throws to make it a 7-5 game with 5:29 to play in the first half.
The lead was built to eight at 16-8, but Lilly and Kelly made back to back basket for pull Cheyney within four at 16-12. The Bobcats converted an offensive rebound and a foul was called on Lilly, her third of the game, the free-throw was made and Buffalo took a 19-12 advantage after 10 minutes.
Washington and Lilly opened the second quarter with buckets to bring Cheyney to 19-16 after a minute. The lead went back up to seven, Lilly connected from beyond the arc to make it 23-19 with 6:09 to play in the first half. Lilly then picked her fourth foul and had to go to the bench. The Bobcats went on an 11-point run to take control of the game and build a 34-19 lead before the Wolves would score again.
Junior Ijahnay Johnson, making her season debut, made two free-throws, then Braxton made back-to-back shots to pull Cheyney with nine 34-25, the half ended with two free-throws from Stone, and the Bobcats led 36-25 at the half.
Buffalo started the third with a triple, the Wolves responded with baskets from Lilly and Kelly to make it a 39-29 contest with 5:57 to play, but the Bobcats then scored the next 11 points to pull away 50-29.
Cheyney returns to action on Saturday February 4, when it travels to Syracuse, NY to take on Bryant & Stratton College at Syracuse with the tipoff scheduled at 4 PM.
