WBB Comeback Falls Short in a Season Ending Loss to the Bobcats

CHEYNEY, PA – Amidst, a standing room only crowd, littered with some of the most successful and decorated alumni in Cheyney history, the shot didn't fall and the story book ending didn't happen, but for one final night, Alfred Cope Hall was alive and buzzing as the Women's basketball teams furious comeback fell short in a season ending 64-63 defeat to Bryant & Stratton (Syracuse), inside Alfred Cope Hall on Monday night.

Senior JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD/ Lincoln University), who transferred to Cheyney from Lincoln for her final season, closed out her career with a second straight game scoring over 20 points, finishing with a game-high 23 points, 17 coming in the second half, after a slow start.

The Wolves other senior Jazmin Walker (Aliquippa, PA,/Aliquippa HS), who has maintained a 4.0 average in the classroom in four years at Cheyney, scored five points and grabbed three rebound and recorded a block.

Sophomore Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD/ CCBC Essex) made a career-high six three pointers and scored 19 points, Junior Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ/Southeastern CC) dished out a game-high seven assists, grabbed seven boards and scored nine points. Sophomore Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) added six points and grabbed a team- high 12 boards, and junior Ijahnay Jonson grabbed five rebounds to aid in the Wolves cause.
 
The Bobcats never trailed after jumping out to a 6-0 lead to start the game. Braxton finally put Cheyney on the board with two free-throws with 7:12 to go in the first. Washington brought the crowd to its feet with back to back three pointers to pull the Wolves within two at 10-8 at the 5:07 mark.

The lead was four points at the end of the first ten minutes 20-16 for Syracuse, then the second quarter was dominated by the Bobcats as they took a 42-29 edge at the half.

The Wolves trailed 46-35 with under four minutes to play in the third, but then went on a 9-2 run to end the quarter trailing 48-44. Lilly scored four points and Washington finished the quarter with her fourth three of the game as the crowd rose in anticipation of a thrilling final ten minutes.

Kelly opened the fourth with a basket to make it a two-point contest 48-46, but the Bobcats responded with eight straight points keyed by back to back triples, to build the lead back to 10 56-46 with 6:34 remaining.

Cheyney trailed 60-50, when it went on an 8-2 run. Washington connected from downtown, Lilly followed with a three and Braxton weaved through the defense and brought the Wolves within four 62-58 with a pull up jumper, forcing a timeout from the Bobcats with 2:46 to go in the fourth.

With the shot clock at 0, a foul was called and the Bobcats were given three free-throw attempts, making two of the three and taking a 64-58 lead with 2:16 to play.

A Lilly basket, followed by another three from Washington, pulled Cheyney within one and the old Wolves Den inside Cope Hall exploded.

The story book ending didn't happen as neither team scored the rest of the way, a shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim and the Bobcats prevailed 64-63, the very appreciative crowd gave the team a standing ovation as they left teh court.

Monday marked the end of the season for the women's basketball team under the tutelage of first year head coach Alishia Mosley. The women returned to action after a two-year hiatus due to 2021 season being canceled due to Covid restrictions and not forming a team in 2022.

Alfred Cope Hall was built in 1961 and is scheduled to be torn down in the spring, with the plans for the future athletics and recreation complex to be revealed in the near future
