GLEN MILLS, PA – Junior Kireh Kelly recorded the first double-double of the season and the Cheyney volleyball squad captured its first set of the season, but visiting Montgomery County Community College won its fifth straight contest in four sets inside the Glen Mills School Rec Center on Wednesday night September 20.
The Wolves trailed late in the first set facing set point at 24-21, then reeled off the final five points of the set to capture the set 26-24. Cheyney jumped out early in the second stanza and appeared to be on the way to a second set victory as well, but the Mustangs responded with the final six points to come away with a 25-23 triumph to even the match.
Set #3 was all Mustangs as they rolled to a 25-10 win.
MCCC broke out to an early advantage in the fourth set and never let go of it. Cheyney pulled within a single point deficit several times but were unable to tie the set. The Wolves trailed 12-10 when the Mustangs pushed ahead 20-13 and led 24-17. Cheyney attempted a comeback, but ultimately fell 25-19 as the Mustangs captured the match 3-1.
Kelly was credited with 12 kills and 12 digs, sophomore Kennedy Jones led the way with 14 digs and added nine kills, junior Vita Fitch registered a career-high 29 assists as the Wolves were credited with a season-best 35 Kills on the night.
Cheyney hits the road for two contests, September 26 at Trinity and September 28 at Baltimore City CC, before returning home on October 2 for a 7 PM contest inside Glen Mills Rec Center vs Washington Adventist.
