Cheyney Battles Bowie in a Five Set Thriller

The Lady Wolves played host to Bowie State (6-19) in women's volleyball and for only the second time this season forced a fifth and deciding set. 

Cheyney (1-22) won the first set 25-21 while Bowie returned the favor in the second set by the identical score.  The Lady Wolves rebounded in the third with a 25-22 victory however dropped the fourth 25-19.  In the fifth and deciding set, the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 16-14.

Brenna Joseph paced Cheyney with 14 kills off of a season high 55 attacks.  Joseph also recorded a team high 25 digs.  Cheyney placed six players in double digit digs.  Kennetha Wallace led the squad with 22 assists.

In the first set, Cheyney jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back.  The Lady Bulldogs were able to close the gap to three in the waning moments but could not get any closer.  In the second set with the score tied at 6, Bowie went on a 9-0 run to take control of set.  This time it was Cheyney who rallied to the deficit to two (23-21) but Bowie scored the sets final two points.  In the third, with the score tied at three, Cheyney went on 5-1 run to capture a lead they would not surrender.  Cheyney built the lead up to 10 (22-12) but the Lady Bulldogs would not make it easy.  Bowie would score the next seven points but in the end Cheyney was able to hold the Bulldogs at bay earning the 25-22 victory.  In the fourth set, Cheyney was leading 13-12 however the Lady Bulldogs rallied to score the next seven points to take a 19-13 lead.  Cheyney was able to cut the lead down to three points (21-18) but could not get any closer as Bowie went onto force the fifth set with a 25-19 victory.  In the fifth and final set, was a just as close as the previous four sets.  Cheyney jumped out early and owned a 6-3 lead.  However, Bowie rallied to knot the game at six.  With the score tied at seven, Bowie went on a 6-2 run to take control.  Cheyney was able to rally, tying the contest at 14.  However , Bowie scored the next two points to earn the hard fought win.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Yaje Ngundam's 15 kills,  Brooke Archer-Simpson added 19 assists and Marissa Martinez registered 32 digs.
 
Cheyney steps back into league play this weekend.  The Lady Wolves will travel to Millersville and Shippensburg on Friday and Saturday.
