CLARION, Pa. -
Dominique Davis scored 16-points, but Cheyney University dropped an 83-67 decision at Clarion University, Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) men's basketball action inside Tippen Gymnasium.
Rafiq Marshall came off the bench to add 9-points for the Wolves (0-2, 0-2 PSAC),
Juwan Mullen,
Imir Bailey and
Lakeem Duncan each tallied seven points for Cheyney,
Duncan led the way with eight rebounds.
Cheyney jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but Clarion (2-2, 2-0 PSAC) went on a 21-to-4 run to take a 21-11 edge with 9:19 left in the first half.
Two
Davis layups ignited a 6-point run for the Wolves to trim the lead to four (21-17), but a 10-to-1 blitz by Clarion gave the Golden Eagles a 31-18 advantage.
Cheyney fought back again and outscored Clarion 12-to-3 to finish out the first half trailing by only four at 34-30.
Mullen started the run with a basket and closed out the half with a free-throw,
Davis added four-points and Duncan made a three for the Wolves.
Davis led Cheyney with eight-points in the first half Mullen added seven. Justin Dobbs led the Golden Eagles with 12-points off the bench.
The Wolves kept the game tight early in the second half and trailed by only five (40-35) after a layup by
Craig McGlond with 15:43 remaining in the second half.
Clarion would score the next nine points to push the lead to 49-35 a 14-point advantage and put the game out of reach.
Clarion went 27-of-44 from the free-throw line and attempted 32 free-throws in the second half. Cheyney made 31 trips to the line in the game, but connected on only 17.
Cheyney plays the final game of its opening three game road trip tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m., when it travels to take on the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
