EDINBORO, Pa. – So. Amir Boney posted career-bests with 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cheyney University men's basketball team, but a valiant comeback fell short as host Edinboro University came out on top with an 85-81 victory Saturday afternoon in PSAC Crossover action inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Wolves (1-8, 1-4 PSAC E) trailed by seven 82-75, when Fr. Zahir Stewart made a three-point shot and was fouled with 24 seconds left to play. Stewart missed the free-throw, but Sr. Andre Allen grabbed the rebound, and Jr. Khaalis Carter connected on another three pointer to cut the lead to one with 17 seconds left.
After the Fighting Scots split a pair of free-throws with 14 seconds showing on the clock, the Wolves turned the ball over with a chance to tie and were forced to foul with two seconds left. Sheldon Brogdon who finished with a game-high 30 points made both free-throws to seal the victory for Edinboro (3-6, 1-4 PSAC W).
Cheyney led through much of the first half, but a 9-0 run put the Fighting Scots up 37-30 at the break. Brogdon led the way with five three-pointers and 18 points. Boney scored 10 points on 4-of-6 (.667) from the field and made both his free-throw attempts. R-Jr. Imir Bailey grabbed a season high eight rebounds and scored seven points for the Wolves.
The second half was a see-saw affair that saw the Fighting Scots push the lead out to double figures 48-38 at the 15:05 mark, but Stewart connected from downtown to ignite a 21-11 run and Cheyney knotted the contest at 59-59 on a Derrick Clanton layup with 8:55 to play.
After and Endiboro basket, Clanton tied the game again at 61-61 with two from the charity stripe. Brogdon would then connect on his seventh three of the game to put the Fighting Scots back in front to stay at the 7:55 mark.
The Wolves kept the game close coming within one several times in the final minutes but connected on only 11-of-18 (.611) free-throws in the second half and were never able to tie the game or regain the lead.
Boney finished the game 10-of-16 (.625) from the field and grabbed a career-best nine boards, Stewart making his first collegiate start, added 14 points (12 in the second half), and four rebounds.
Marshall dished out a career-high nine assists to go along with 11 points and six rebounds and Bailey ended the game with nine points and nine rebounds.
Cheyney is off until Friday, Dec. 30 when it hosts PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg University with the tip-off scheduled for 7:30 inside Alfred Cope Hall.
