EDINBORO, Pa. – So. Briana Hedgepeth scored a team-high 12 points, but the Cheyney University Women's basketball team head into the winter break with a 78-38 loss at Edinboro University, in PSAC Crossover action, Saturday afternoon inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Lady Wolves (0-5, 0-5 PSAC E) kept the contest close and trailed by only three points at 10-to-7 following two free-throws from Hedgepeth with 2:56 left in the first quarter. The Fighting Scots (7-2, 5-0 PSAC W) scored the final three points of the period to take a 13-7 lead.
A basket by TaKayla Ellis cut the lead to 13-to-9, as Cheyney used a 7-3 run to make it a 16-14 game on a three-point shot from Hedgepeth with 7:41 showing on the clock.
Edinboro then reeled off the next 14 points to take a commanding lead of 30-14 with 1:01 remaining in the first half.
The Wolves could not get any closer than 13 points in the second half.
Hedgepeth made 4-of-7 (.571) shots from the field including 2-of-4 from three-point range and tied for the team-lead with four rebounds. So. Marlon Herring, who also reached double figures, by hitting 50% (5-10) of her shots from the field to finish with 11 points, was credited with two steals, and a block, while matching Hedgepeth with four boards.
Sr. Amber Genwirght, who scored a season-high six points, also grabbed four rebounds off the bench for the Lady Wolves.
Edinboro won its seventh straight game, Ciara Rosten recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 16 rebounds, while Jontay Walton had season-high 14 points.
Cheyney returns to action as it hosts East Stroudsburg University on Friday, December 30 at 5:30 PM, for its first game of the season vs a PSAC Eastern Division opponent, inside Alfred Cope Hall.
