CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Freshman
Zahir Stewart broke a 74-74 tie with back to back three-point shots to lead the Cheyney University men's basketball team to its first victory of the season 84-80 at California University of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon in PSAC crossover action inside the Convocation Center.
Junior
Rafiq Marshall connected on two free-throws with three seconds left with the Wolves (1-6, 1-2 PSAC) ahead 82-80 to seal the the initial victory for Acting Head Coach Dawud Morris. Ramon Creighton poured in 23 of his game-high 36 points in the second half for the Vulcans (2-6, 0-3 PSAC).
Stewart and Marshall each finished with 15 points to lead a balanced Cheyney attack that saw ten Wolves score in the game. Junior
Craig McGlond also reached double-figures with 10 points, while senior
Derrick Clanton, who made two critical free-throws with 13 seconds left to put Cheyney up 82-78, added a season and career-high nine points.
The Wolves shot a season-best 52.7 % (30-57) from the field, made 6-of-7 three-point shots in the first half and finished 8-17 (47.1 %) from beyond the arc and connected on 16-19 (84.2 %) from the free=throw line including 4-of-4 in the final 13 seconds to ensure the victory.
There were 20 lead changes and 15 ties in the game with the final tie at 74-74 with 3:35 remaining when Stewart put Cheyney ahead to stay with a three-pointer. Creighton cut the lead to 77-76 with a layup, but Stewart made it a four-point contest at 80-76, with another triple, (his third of the game), with 2:28 showing on the clock.
The Vulcans, scored to make it 80-78, and had an opportunity to take the lead, but missed on a three-pointer with 14 seconds left. Clanton secured the rebound and was fouled, then stepped to the line and made both free-throws.
Junior
Olin Ugo matched his career and season-high with eight points and pulled down a team-best five rebounds, senior
Basir Fulmore was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and made both his three-point attempts to finish with eight points.
Sophomore
Dikemba Amugo chipped in with seven points and Marshall, who led the way with four assists, also grabbed four rebounds and collected two steals.
Cheyney is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM when is travels to Slippery Rock. You can watch the game
