Late Rally by Wolves Falls Short vs. Kutztown

CHEYNEY, Pa. - Juwan Mullen scored 22 points and seven rebounds to lead four Cheyney University players in double-figures, but visiting Kutztown shot 30-53 (56.6) and 7-12 (58.3) on three's to come away with an important 90-84 victory over the Wolves Tuesday night inside Cope Hall.

Rafiq Marshall added 16 points, Eugene Lett continued his recent excellent play with 15 points and six rebounds and Imir Bailey chipped in with 13 points and five rebounds for the Wolves (2-20, 1-18 PSAC E).

The victory puts the Golden Bears (19-5, 16-4 PSAC E) a half-game ahead of West Chester in the fight for the top spot in the east. Ryan Connolly was nearly perfect connecting on all seven of his shots from field including 6-for-6 from beyond the arc and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line for a game-high 27 points.

Kutztown never trailed in the contest and the game was tied only once at 2-2, the Golden Bears went on a 14-2 run to lead 16-4 at the 14:18 mark.

Lett and Basir Fulmore made back-to-back three-point shots to cut the deficit down to six. The lead would fluctuate from 3-to-9 throughout the half with Kutztown holding a 49-41 edge at the break.

Marshall scored 11 points to lead the Wolves, Bailey added nine and Lett and Mullen scored seven points each.

Connolly went 5-of-5 from beyond the arc to pace the Golden Bears with 17 first-half points.

Kutztown opened the second-half with a 10-to-0 run to take an 18-point lead (59-41) with 16:49 to play.

The deficit was still at 16 when the Wolves went on a 13-to-3 run to bring the crowd to its feet and make it a six point contest with 2:03 left to play.

Cheyney was able to make it a one possession game after a three-pointer from Marshall with 23 seconds remaining, but Connolly made 3-of-4 from the line to provide the final margin of six (90-84).

The Wolves are back in action tomorrow night with another PSAC East match-up at crosstown rival West Chester with the tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
