Small Comes Up Big: Lady Wolves Top Huskies 55-53

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Jr. Adriene Small made a free-throw with 35 seconds left to break a 53-53 tie and Cheyney University held Bloomsburg University scoreless the rest of the way to come away with a 55-53 triumph in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon inside Nelson Field House.

The victory is the third in the last four games for the Lady Wolves (5-20, 3-18 PSAC E) over an eight day span. The streak began with a 64-62 win over Shippensburg on Feb 13, which stopped a 12-game skid against the Raiders and then a 78-62 victory against Kutztown on Tuesday, to end a 14-game drought vs. the Golden Bears.

Bloomsburg (13-12, 10-11 PSAC E) had won the last eleven meetings between the two schools with Cheyney's last victory over the Huskies coming on February 6, 2010 - a 71-61 win at the Nelson Field House.

Kyra Hines-Allen led the Wolves with 16 points and eight rebounds, but fouled out with Cheyney holding its largest lead of the night at 50-46 with 3:31 to play.

The Huskies would take the lead on two free-throws and a three-point shot from Alyssa Mack, Amber Genwright then tied the game with a free-throw at the 2:46 mark.

Small put CU in front with a layup from Shania Stamper, but the Huskies would tie the game on two free-throws from Morgan Klunk, to make it a 53-53 contest with 44 seconds left.

Small grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled by Adreana Sadowski, who fouled out on the play after scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds with six blocked shots.

The junior from Blackwood, New Jersey, made the first free-throw which proved to be the difference in the game.

Cheyney, who connected on 12 of its first 13 free-throws, missed four straight from the line in the final 35 seconds until Aerie DeJesus made it a two point game with a free-throw with seven seconds remaining.

DeJesus and Genwright finished with 10 points each, Stamper added nine including three-point shot that put the Wolves ahead 48-46, which was it their first lead since it was a 6-to-5 game five minutes into the first.

The Wolves managed only 18-points in the first half and trailed 30-18 at the half. Hines-Allen scored 10, with a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line, and DeJesus added six for Cheyney.

Sadowski led all players with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Cheyney sliced a 12-point half-time deficit down to four, by winning the third period 17-to-9 to make it a 39-35 game heading to the fourth.

Small scored all five of her points in the fourth period and added four rebounds, Marlon Herring, who also scored all of her six points in the fourth period, made all four of her free-throw attempts and tied for team-high honors with eight rebounds.

Cheyney returns to action in the final game of the season on Wednesday Feb. 24 as the Lady Wolves honor their two seniors' Kyra Hines-Allen and Aerie DeJesus with the tipoff scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
