Men's Basketball Uses Balanced Attack to Down Seton Hill 63-59

CHEYNEY, Pa. - Fr. Zahir Stewart's driving layup, with 1:18 to play, broke a 59-59 tie and So. Dikemba Amugo grabbed a defensive rebound, and made two free-throws with 2 seconds left to put the game away for Cheyney in a 63-59 victory, in PSAC Crossover action, against Seton Hill University Wednesday night inside Cope Hall.
 
Jr. Khaalis Carter scored a season-high 14 points to lead a balanced Cheyney (2-14, 2-10 PSAC E)   attack. Carter came off the bench to make 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc as the Wolves shot a season-best 50% (6-12) to help secure its first home win of the season. Jr. Craig McGlond added 10-points as the Cheyney bench held a 37-10 edge in reserve scoring.
 
Noah Davis, who paced all scorers with 34 points, was unable to make a three-point shot for the Griffins (7-9, 4-8 PSAC W) as the visitors went for the victory with its final possession.
 
Seton Hill jumped out to a 15-4 lead at the first media timeout with 15:40 to play, but the Wolves responded with a 12-to-1 run to knot the contest at 16-16 with 11:27 left in the half. Carter and Jr. Rafiq Marshall each made three-pointers while Stewart and Jr. Imir Bailey both converted driving layups in the run.

The Griffins built the lead back six, but the Wolves closed the half with a 6-2 run to make it a 29-27 Seton Hill lead at the break.
 
Davis led all scorers with 16 points and Seton Hill made 12-of-14 (85.7%) free-throws in the first half. McGlond led Cheyney with eight points and four rebounds, Carter made two triples for six and Stewart led the way with three assists and two steals.
 
The second twenty minutes was a see-saw affair with 11 lead changes and eight ties.
 
Marshall opened the second stanza with a jumper to tie the game and Jr. Issac Bittle grabbed an offensive rebound and converted to give Cheyney its first lead of the game.
 
The Griffins would regain the advantage and a three-pointer from Davis made it a 49-44 game with 9:57 to play. A steal by Carter led to a thunderous fast break dunk from Amugo, then Carter turned an offensive rebound into an assist, when he found Stewart who would connect from downtown to tie the contest at 49-49 at the 7:41 mark.
 
Once again Cheyney fell behind by three with 4:46 remaining, but two free-throws from Marshall and another three from Carter put the Wolves ahead 59-57 with 3:49 left to play.
 
Two free-throws by the Griffins tied the game for a final time with 2:21 to play, setting the stage for Stewart who took a pass from Carter and drove to the hoop for the deciding layup to give the Wolves a 59-57 lead.
  
Carter got a piece of a jumper that was corralled by Amir Boney, who led the Wolves with six rebounds, after a Cheyney miss, Seton Hill called a time-out to set up a play to get Davis open, but the Wolves defense forced a difficult three-point attempt and Amugo pulled down the board.
 
Stewart had an excellent all-around game with seven points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals as did Marshall, who led the Wolves with five assists to go along with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists.
 
Amugo chipped in with six points, five rebounds and a blocked shot and Sr. Basir Fulmore added six points, four assists three steals and two rebounds.
 
Cheyney made 11-of-13 (84.6%) from the free-throw line, while Seton Hill connected on 22-of-29 (75.9%) attempts.

The Wolves head back into PSAC East action on Saturday with a 1:00 PM tipoff against undefeated and 8th ranked Shippensburg University.
