Lady Wolves Can't Overcome Slow Start in Loss to Shippensburg

CHEYNEY, Pa. - Jr. Shania Stamper scored 11 points and dished out a career-high seven rebounds and the Cheyney University women's basketball team battled furiously, but could not overcome a slow start in dropping a 69-56 decision to Shippensburg University in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon inside Cope Hall.

Stamper went 3-of-5 from the field and made all four of her free-throws, Jr. TaKayla Ellis equaled Stamper with 11 points and So. Marlon Herring collected her third double-double of the season with a game high 12 rebounds and 10 points for the Wolves (3-10, 3-10 PSAC East).

The Raiders (14-5, 9-4 PSAC East), who won for a ninth straight time and sit on top of the table in the east, were paced by Logan Snyder with 18 points and seven rebounds and Lauren Gold who added 16 points.

Shippensburg bolted out to a 17-point lead 24-7 after the first quarter connecting 7-of-11 shots from the field and 8-of-12 free-throw attempts, while the Wolves only earned one trip to the line in the first.

The teams traded baskets in the second and the Raiders took a 41-24 advantage after 20 minutes.

Cheyney came out of the break with a three-pointer from Stamper, which ignited a 9-to-1 run to cut the deficit to down to nine at 42-33 with 7:30 to play in the third.
The Wolves could not get any closer, despite holding the Raiders to just 13 points in the quarter and trailed 54-41 heading to the final period.

Cheyney cut the lead down to nine twice in the fourth quarter, but were unable to threaten the Shippensburg lead as the Raiders attempted 41 free-throws in the contest and were able to keep a comfortable advantage.

So. Quinniea Gross chipped in with nine points and five rebounds and Sr.'s Taschell Phillips and Adriene Small added seven points and five boards each.

TaKayla Ellis went 2-of-5 on three-point shots and now has 93 career makes with puts her in sixth place all-time in three-pointers made at Cheyney.

The Lady Wolves head to Millersville on Wednesday to take on the Marauders at 5:30, then return to Cope Hall for a 1: p.m. tipoff with Bloomsburg on Saturday and on
Monday Jan. 30 for the Battle of the First with The Lincoln at 5:30.
