ERIE, Pa. – The Cheyney University women's basketball team opened the PSAC season on Saturday afternoon with an 87-53 loss to host Mercyhurst University in a PSAC crossover contest inside the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
Junior
Marlon Herring led the Wolves (0-3, 0-1 PSAC East) with 13 points and eight rebounds, but the Lakers (1-3, 1-0 PSAC West) were nearly flawless in jumping out to a 20-2 lead and connected on 20-of 30 (.667)shots in the first half, including 7-of-12 (.583) from beyond the arc and led 53-29 after 20 minutes.
Senior
TaKayla Ellis reached double figures with 12 points for the Lady Wolves, with a team-leading three assists and three steals. Senior
Yasmine Dorrielan also reached double-digits in scoring with 10 points on 5-of-9 (.555) shooting from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
Amber Rens had a perfect shooting day for Mercyhurst making all eight of her field-goal attempts and her only free-throw, led all scorers with 19.
Cheyney is back in action on Sunday as they take the short trip to Gannon University for another PSAC crossover contest with the Golden Knights, who evened its record at 2-2, 1-0 PSAC West with a 76-73 victory over West Chester on Saturday.
Gannon and Cheyney opened the season at the CIAA/PSAC Challenge on Nov. 10 and 11 in Charlotte, N.C. Host the Golden Knights defeated Elizabeth City University the opener and then fell to host Johnson C. Smith in the final game of the challenge. The Lady Wolves dropped both contests.
Saturday saw the opening of the PSAC Network with all PSAC basketball games streaming live through the PSAC APP and the host schools Stretch Internet Portal.
