Men's Basketball Downs UPJ 66-62 in Thrilling Home Opener

CHEYNEY, Pa. – Amir Boney's rebound and layup with 49 seconds left broke a 60-60 tie as the Cheyney University men's basketball team won its home opener 66-62 over the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in PSAC crossover action Saturday afternoon inside Cope Hall.

Freshman Cliff St. Juste made three consecutive three-point shots to turn a two-point deficit into a seven-point lead finished with a game-high 22 points, Jeff Lewis had his first career double-double with 16 points and 16-rebounds to help propel the Wolves (1-5, 1-2 PSAC W) to the victory in front of the home crowd.

The Mountain Cats (4-3, 1-2 PSAC W) had built a five-point second held lead after trailing by three at the break 32-29.

Cheyney had jumped out to a 30-18 advantage, its largest lead of the season, as Lewis ignited a 16-6 run with a steal and a layup as part of a personal ten point run which included another layup and two three-pointers.

Johnathan Howard, who grabbed five rebounds and scored four points, made two free-throws and Derrick Biney added four points in the run.

UPJ responded by closing the half on an 11-2 run to make it a 32-29 score at the break.

The Mountain Cats quickly took their first lead of the game, since the opening score, with six-points to start the second half, St. Juste tied the game at 35-35 with a three-pointer.

UPJ held a 48-44 advantage when Lewis followed his own miss and scored, he missed the free-throw, but Howard pulled down the rebound and found St. Juste who connected from downtown to give the Wolves a lead they would never relinquish at the 6:38 mark.

Howard then grabbed a UPJ miss and Lewis fed St. Juste who knocked down the triple, then after a steal by St. Juste he made it three in a row from beyond the arc with an assist from Kyle Parker.

A layup from Amir Boney was then followed by a thunderous dunk by Lewis off a pass from Howard to give the Wolves a 10-point cushion with 3:59 to play.

The Mountain Cats responded with an 11-1 run to tie the game at 60-60 with 1:22 to play.

Boney grabbed a miss then rebounded his own miss before putting the Wolves ahead to stay.

Lewis pulled down a UPJ miss and made two from the charity stripe, before the Levi Masua made a basket with 15 seconds left and was fouled, he missed the free-throw, but UPJ got the offensive rebound and missed a layup but the ball went out of bounds off of Cheyney with four seconds showing on the clock.

St. Juste intercepted the inbounds pass and his layup at the buzzer closed the scoring making it a 66-62 victory for Cheyney.

St. Juste made 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 7-of-10 from the field, Lewis was 6-of-13 from the field including 2-of-6 on three-point shots.

Boney added eight points four rebounds and three assists, Parker had a team-high five assists and added seven points with a three.

Cheyney is back in action on Sunday as Indiana University of Pennsylvania (5-4, 2-1 PSAC W) visits Cope Hall with the tipoff scheduled for 3:00 PM.
