EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Jr. TaKayla Ellis moved into a tie for second place all-time in three-point shots made in Chenyney University women's basketball history on Wednesday night, but host East Stroudsburg University used a 17-to-4 run, from the midpoint of the first quarter until midway through the second period, to take control of the game en route to a 86-54 victory in PSAC East action inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
Ellis paced the Wolves (3-14, 3-13 PSAC E) with 12 points, So. Quinniea Gross added 11 points and six rebounds. Madison Tamburini and Imani Brown each scored 18 point to lead the Warriors (13-7, 9-7 PSAC E).
Ellis now has 101 made three-pointers in her career, putting her in a tie with Latoya Showell (2002-05) and Monica Haynes (1991-95) and only trails Martina Randall, who made 108 shots from beyond the arc from 2005-09.
Ellis started the night in fifth place with 98 made three's and needed two makes to tie Ranisha Childress (2003-05) for fourth place with 100. The Jr. from Suitland, Md. made back-to-back triples at the 5:50 then 5:17 mark of the first period to reach the century mark. She then moved into a tie for second-place, when she connected from downtown with 5:48 to play in the third.
Cheyney never led in the game and fell behind 5-0 when Gross scored to put the Wolves on the board, ESU pushed the lead to 12-4 when Ellis connected from beyond the arc to ignite a 10-6 run. Ellis added her second three, So. Marlon Herring and Gross each added layups to make it an 18-14 game at the 4:15 mark.
The Warriors scored the next nine points to take a 27-14 edge, Herring and Sr. Adriene Small scored to cut the lead down to nine at 27-18 at the end of the first quarter.
East Stroudsburg opened the second with an eight-point run to take control of the contest.
Cheyney heads to Mansfield on Saturday afternoon for another PSAC East game vs the Mountaineers. Mansfield won the first meeting 62-57 inside Cope Hall on January 6. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
