CHEYNEY, Pa. – Senior Taschell Philips came off the bench to score 12 points to lead the Cheyney University women's basketball team, but visiting Kutztown took the lead early in the second period and never let it go as they came away with a 78-56 victory in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
Jr. TaKayla Ellis added 11 points and a game-high six assists for the Lady Wolves (4-16, 4-15 PSAC E), Alex Heck paced the Golden Bears (10-16, 7-11 PSAC E) with a game-high 16 points and 12 rebounds.
The teams were even after the first quarter at 15-15, but Kutztown went on a 9-0 run to open the second. The Wolves responded with six straight to cut the deficit to 24-21 with 4:21 left in the second period.
Sr. Adriene Small made back-to-back layups and Phillips connected to bring Cheyney within three.
The Golden Bears closed the quarter with the final four points to take a 30-23 advantage into the half.
The lead grew to 11 points midway through the third quarter, when Phillips ignited another six-point run with two baskets and Sr. Amber Genwright went coast to coast for a layup to make it a 41-36 contest with 2:33 to play in the third.
Heck made two jumpers to push the lead back to nine and the Golden Bears took a 48-38 lead to the fourth and Cheyney could not get any closer.
Ellis made one-three-point shot to push her total to 104 just four behind Martina Randall (2005-09) who hold the Cheyney all-time mark with 108 made three's.
The Lady Wolves return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Lock Haven for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
