TaKayla Ellis Leads Women's Basketball to 58-50 Win at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Jr. TaKayla Ellis led the Cheyney University women's basketball team with 18 points, a career-high six steals and five assists to a 58-50 victory over host Lock Haven University Wednesday night in PSAC East action inside Thomas Fieldhouse.

The Lady Wolves (5-16, 5-15 PSAC E), who led 42-41 heading into the fourth period scored the first 11 points take a 53-41 advantage while holding the Bald Eagles (8-15, 5-14 PSAC E) scoreless until the 3:17 mark of the fourth.

The game was tied at 11-11 after the first period and 26-26 at the half after Cheyney won the third 16-to-15, it captured the fourth 16-to-9.

A steal by Ellis led to a layup from So. Briana Hedgepeth to ignite the deciding run. Sr. Taschell Phillips added back to back baskets, then a layup from Sr. amber Genwright and two free-throws by Ellis capped the run.

Genwright went 5-of-6 from the line down the stretch and 8-of-12 from the free-throw line overall and finished with 12 points and four assists. Phillips came off the bench to score 10 points and grab a team-high eight rebounds. Hedgepeth added eight points and five rebounds.

Ellis made two, three-point shots to push her total to 106 just two behind Martina Randall (2005-09) who hold the Cheyney all-time mark with 108 made three's.

Genwright made 19-of-23 shots from the free-throw line in the two victories over Lock Haven this season, after going 11-for-11 in the Wolves 75-65 triumph inside Cope Hall on Jan. 11.

Cheyney forced 22 Lock Haven turnovers and only committed 10, while picking up 13 steals in winning at Lock Haven for the first time since 2004.

Lysa Mealing led the Bald Eagles, with 11 points and 17 rebounds, who held a 47-35 advantage off the glass.

The Wolves return to action on Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg with tipoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
