Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Mansfield

MANSFIELD, Pa – Jr. Rafiq Marshall led the Cheyney University men's basketball team with 26 points, seven assists and added four rebounds, but host Mansfield University jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed en route to an 82-64 victory Saturday afternoon inside Decker Gymnasium.

Marshall went on a personal six-point run to bring the Wolves (2-20, 2-15 PSAC E) within one at 17-16 at the 10:04 mark of the first half. The Mounties (9-11, 7-10 PSAC E) responded with an eight-point run to take control and pushed the lead to 40-25 at the break.

Marshall led the Wolves with 11 points while So. Amir Boney added six points and four rebounds. Malik Carter led all scorers with 12 points and Matt Tamanosky chipped in with 10, the Mounties forced 14 turnovers and held an 18-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Mansfield built the advantage to 22 (55-33), when Cheyney used an 8-to-0 run to cut the deficit down to 14. Boney started the run with a layup, and Jr. Olin Ugo added two baskets during the run.

The Wolves, playing their fourth game in eight days, were not able to get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Boney finished with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals, Marshall went 9-of-14 from the field including connecting on both his three-point attempts and made 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Tamanosky paced the Mounties with 23 points and Cedrick Powell registered a double-double with 11 assists and 10 points.

Cheyney returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts crosstown rival West Chester University with the tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Cope Hall.
