LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Cheyney University women's basketball dominated the first quarter building its largest lead of the season 27-2, but the host Lock haven team came all the way back to tie the game at 58-58. The Wolves responded with the next four points and then pulled away late for an 80-73 victory in PSAC East action Saturday afternoon inside Thomas Fieldhouse.
Marlon Herring, who went 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, scored 18 points and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds to lead the Wolves (4-15, 2-10 PSAC E). Takayla Ellis, who opened the game with two three-point shots and her free-throw put Cheyney ahead to stay led all scorers with 21 points.
Rilegh Devine went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to lead the Bald Eagles (3-14, 2-11 PSAC E) with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Ellis made two from downtown and Khadija Pearson connected from downtown and made a free-throw as the Lady Wolves bolted out to a 10-0 lead.
Lock Haven made two from the charity stripe to get on the scoreboard at the six-minute mark of the first quarter, but Cheyney would close the quarter with the final 15 points.
Herring went 6-of-6 from the line, Pearson made another three, Yasmine Dorrielan and Drazana Vulic each added a basket and two free-throws from Ellis accounted the Wolves run and a 27-2 edge after the first ten minutes.
Lock Haven, who did not make a basket from the field until 8:47 remained in the second period chipped away at the deficit with a 22-9 advantage in the second and Cheyney led 36-24 after 20 minutes.
???????Cheyney built the lead back to 21 points midway through the third period and held a 53-33 advantage with 3:40 to play in the third.
Lock Haven, who closed the quarter on a 17-5 run to make a 58-50 game after three, opened the fourth with the first eight points to tie the contest at 58-58 with 7:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Wolves, who never trailed, took the lead back with a free-throw from Ellis and Herring then scored the next five points for Cheyney.
The Lady Wolves, who were clinging to a one-point edge 69-68 with 2:45 left to play, went on a 9-0 run to put the game away.
Herring made two free-throws, Ellis made a jumper as did Briana Hedgepeth, Ellis made wo more from the charity stripe and a Gianni Hill free-throw made it a 78-68 contest in the final 30 seconds.
???????Dorrielan just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, Pearson finished with 10 points and Hill registered a game-high five assists.
The Wolves head to Mansfield on Wednesday to take on the Mounties with the tip-off scheduled for 5:30 pm.
