Volleyball Closes its Season In Baltimore on Thursday Night

CHEYNEY, PA. – Wolves volleyball heads to Baltimore, MD on Thursday night to close out its season with a match vs Notre Dame of Maryland University with the first serve scheduled for 7 PM inside the Marion Burke Knott (MBK) Athletic Gym.

Cheyney (3-11), is coming off a senior night defeat to Washington Adventist University on Tuesday night. The Wolves fell by identical scores of 25-18 in all three sets.
The Gators (14-7, 7-1 CSAC), saw its 12-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night in a 3-1 defeat to Cedar Crest.

Tuesday was Senior recognition and Wolves Breast Cancer Awareness Night inside Cope Hall as Coach Riley-Bozier, along with Director of Athletics Tammy A. Babgy honored our two seniors, Hassana Coleman and Veronica Martin in a pre-match ceremony.

The Wolves got off to a slow start in the match with the Shock, surrendering seven of the first eight points in the first set.
Cheyney rebounded to tighten the match, with a four-point run to make it a 7-5 score with freshman Kennedy Jones serving.  The set stayed close with the Shock holding the lead throughout, the Shock then took control of the set, by reeling off five straight points to take a 21-13 advantage and captured the first stanza 25-18.

The second set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the score tied five different times and included four lead changes.
Cheyney held an early 2-1 edge following an ace from sophomore Vita Fitch and then jumped back ahead 7-6 with a kill from sophomore Jireh Kelly. Washington Adventist responded with a quick five-point outburst to take a 12-7 lead. The Wolves pulled fought back and made it a two-point set with a kill from Kelly and a Shock error to make it 18-16. Another Kelly kill made it 19-17, but once again the Shock took control by scoring the next five points and closed the set at 25-18

The final set followed the familiar pattern of the evening as Martin opened with a kill and score was tied five times early on. Cheyney evened the set at 5-5, which was followed by a 7-1 run from Washington Adventist as it took a 12-6 edge. Cheyney would fight all the way back with Kelly serving, to score seven consecutive points and take a 13-12 lead. Another kill by Kelly gave Cheyney  its final advantage of the evening at 14-13. The Wolves trailed 18-14 when a kill from Jones and ended the run and the closed to within two at 18-16 and 19-17, but once again the Shock took control late in the set and went on to take the match 25-18.

Kelly paced the Wolves with 10 kills while adding four digs, Fitch had a team-high 10 assists and led Cheyney with five digs, Jones recorded five kills two assists one ace two digs and a solo block. Martin had three kills with a dig and a block assist, Freshman Tania Hall registered seven assists, two aces, two digs and a block assist and Coleman was credited with three digs.
