ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman
Jalen Boyd-Savage (Pennsauken, NJ, Paul VI HS) pored in 34 points to lead the Cheyney men's basketball team to victory in its season opener over host Bryant and Stratton (Rochester), Sunday afternoon inside the Edison High School Gymnasium in Rochester, New York.
The Wolves trailed 30-29 at halftime, but outscored the Bobcats (0-4) 46-26 in the second half to secure an opening game victory,
Boyd-Savage scored 23 points in the second half, almost equaling the Bobcats total in the final 20 minutes. Sophomore
Kian Nixon (Upper Marlboro, MD, Feather River CC) registered a double-double in his Cheyney debut with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Freshman
Robert Keys (Philadelphia, PA, Paul Robeson HS) also reached double-figures with ten points while classmate
Rynell Bert (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy HS) tallied nine points in his first collegiate contest.
Cheyney shot 26-57 (45.6%), from the field and 16-24 (66.7%) from the free-throw line, paced by Boyd-Savage who connected on 9-11 from the charity stripe. The Wolves defense held the Bobcats to just 16-41 (39.0%) from the field.
The Wolves, led by Coach Terrell Stokes, who is entering his second-season at the helm at Cheyney, will host Central Penn University on Wednesday night with the game scheduled to start around 7:30 p.m., following the conclusion of the women's contest that is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip off inside Alfred Cope Hall.
