WBB Returns to Cope Hall with Victory over Central Penn

CHEYNEY, PA – JuniorNytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ, Southeastern CC) registered a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, to help first year head coach Alishia Mosley and the Cheyney women's basketball team to their first victory of  the season 76-64 over Central Penn University on Wednesday night November 16, inside Cope Hall.

Freshman Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD, CCBC Essex) scored 24 points to help propel the (1-2) Wolves, as women's basketball returned to the Cope Hall court for the first time since February of 2020. Senior JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD, Lincoln University) also had a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards to help Cheyney end the Knights (3-3) three-game winning streak.

The Wolves took a 35-31, lead at the half, as Braxton's attempt from beyond half-court was caught in mid-air by Lilly and put in before the buzzer sounded. Lily with 12 and Washington with 11 points paced the Wolves in the first 20 minutes

The game was tied 40-40, the seventh and final tie of the contest, with 4:32 to play in the third, when Washington scored to put the wolves ahead to stay and spark 20 unanswered points to close out the quarter. Washington went on a seven-point personal run to turn a six-point contest into a 53-40 lead with 1:48 to play, and Braxton finished off the run with an offensive rebound and a put back as the end of the third.

The Wolves outscored the Knights 25-9 in the third quarter to take control and build a 60-40 advantage heading to the fourth quarter.

Senior Jazmin Walker (Aliquippa, PA, Aliquippa HS) was also strong off the glass with 11 rebounds and added six points, sophomore Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside HS) contributed with eight rebounds and seven points. Braxton dished out a game-high seven assists and led the way with three steals.

The Wolves return to action on Wednesday November 30 at 5:30, when they host Washington Adventist University as the opener of a double-header inside Cope Hall.
