WBB Falls to Washington Adventist on Wednedsay Night

Cheyney, PA - Cheyney women's basketball returned to action for the first time in two weeks, and could not overcome a slow start and fell, to visiting Washington Adventist University (WAU), 79-57 on Wednesday night inside Cope Hall.

Freshman Maciyah Washington (Bowie, MD, CCBC Essex) led the Wolves (1-3) with 18 points as three Cheyney players finished in double-figures in scoring. Senior JaNya Lilly (Baltimore, MD, Lincoln University) added 15 points and tied freshman Nytasia Braxton (Camden, NJ, Southeastern CC) for team-high with four assists. Braxton also scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Shock improved to 4-2 on the year as four players reached double digits and used their size advantage to dominate the backboards with a 54-33 edge of the glass.

The Shock never trailed in the contest after scoring the games first five points, Cheyney got on the board with a free-throw from Washington and a basket by sophomore Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside HS) brought the Wolves to within 5-3, but WAU then went on a 10-2 run to build a 10-point lead at 15-5, a Lilly three-pointer ended the run. The Shock took a 17-8 lead after the first 10 minutes.

A Braxton three brought Cheyney to within six (17-11), but they could not get any closer and the Shock took a 41-28 lead at the half and started the third to build the lead to 19 (47-28).  A couple of free-throws and a basket from Lilly pulled the Wolves to within 15 (47-32), but that was as close as they would get.

Kelly grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, had a team-best three steals and scored seven points

Cheyney returns to action on Monday night December 12 at 5:30 at Lincoln University for the Battle of the First inside Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
