Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA) recorded a career high 11 kills, but the Cheyney University volleyball squad fell to Penn State Lehigh Valley in four sets Saturday afternoon inside Alfred Cope Hall.
The Wolves captured a see-saw first set, with a five-point run, keyed by the serving of senior
Adele Mosley (Philadelphia, PA, Bodine H.S. for Iinternational Affairs) and three kills from freshman
Tania Hall (Elizabethville, PA), to turn a 20-19 deficit into a 25-21 opening set victory. The score was tied 18 times in the first.
Jones recorded five kills in the set, sophomore
Jireh Kelly (Philadelphia,PA ) added three kills, along with four digs and sophomore
Vita Fitch (York, PA) registered eight assists and two kills.
The (2-0) Nittany Lions dominated the second and third sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-12, to take a two sets to one advantage.
The Wolves responded in the fourth set and held a 13-9 lead midway through the set, but Penn State Lehigh Valley went an a run and tied the game at 14-14.
The teams traded side-outs and the set was knotted at 17-17, when the Nittany Lions reeled off eight of the final ten points for the 25-19 win in set four and to take the match 3-1.
Fitch finished the afternoon with 19 assists to lead all players, Jones with 11 and Kelly with eight paced Cheyney, who recorded a season high of 29 kills on the afternoon. Hall finished with four kills and junior
Valerie Lighty (Philadelphia,PA, , ) and Fitch added two each.
Maci Ramey led Penn State Lehigh Valley with 10 kills, Bridget Jones had seven kills and a team high 14 assists in the victory.
Kelly led the way with 10 digs and Jones chipped in with four, junior
Julia Bell (Hyattsville, MD) added three digs while Hall and Fitch recorded two apiece.
Bell and Kelly topped the Wolves with three aces each and Hall and Jones were credited with two each.
The Wolves are on the road for the next three matches, beginning with a trip to Keystone College on Tuesday September 13, with the first serve scheduled for 7:00 PM from La Plume, PA.
