CHEYNEY, PA – THE BATTLE OF THE FIRST, volleyball edition takes place inside Cope Hall on Tuesday night September 27, as Cheyney University volleyball squad hosts Lincoln University (PA), with the first serve scheduled for 7 PM.
Both teams are coming off road victories, heading into the match.
The Wolves, (2-6) led by 25 kills from sophomore
Jireh Kelly (Salisbury, MD, Parkside, HS) and 27 assists from classmate
Vita Fitch (York, PA, William Penn HS), split two matches on Saturday at Trinity University (DC).
Cheyney fell in the opener to Mid-Atlantic Christian University, before responding with a straight sets victory over the hosts. Freshman
Kennedy Jones (Havertown, PA, Haverford HS ) served eight aces in the win over the Tigers.
The Lions (3-7, 1-4 CIAA) broke a seven-match losing streak with a three-set victory over Livingstone College on Sunday in Bowie Maryland.
It's the second meeting of the season between the two HBCU rivals.
The first match was the season opener for Cheyney, and the Wolves initial contest under the tutelage of newly appointed head Coach Ramona Riley-Boozier.
Lincoln took advantage of the newly formed squad, by scoring the first ten points of the match en route to a 25-8 victory in the first set.
The Wolves kept the second set close and only trailed 8-4 at one point, but Lincoln pulled away for a 25-10 triumph in set number 2.
Cheyney held fast in the third set, and following an ace from freshman Kennedy Jones, pulled within 13-9. After the teams exchanged side outs, Lincoln reeled off eight consecutive points, to take a commanding advantage, eventually closing out the match 25-14.
The Wolves had difficulty returning serve, as the Lions racked up a school record 26 aces on the evening.
Tuesdays match is the first of two consecutive home contests for the Wolves. Cheyney will next host Manor College on Wednesday, October 5 at 7 PM.
